Trail Descriptions
Nakkertok has a 75 km network of trails including a 24 km link trail between the cabins at Nakkertok South and the cabins of Nakkertok North (click here for driving directions). The trails at South are groomed for skating and classic skiing with a state-of-the-art Pisten Bully groomer. Two loops are lit at night. The backcountry trails at North are groomed by snowmobile track-setter for classical skiing only at present.
All of these trails are available for members’ use at all times, but South is sometimes busy with races and jackrabbit classes. The trails at Nakkertok North are almost always quiet.
The trails at South form more or less a grid, extending for about 4 km north into the bush and slightly higher country. These offer enjoyable skiing, and are suitable for beginners, with the exception of a few short stretches. One can make an 8-km tour by taking #1, #24 (via Morrall Cabin), and #4 – or vice-versa. This can be extended to 12 km, with more challenge, by following #1, or #4T, to the junction of the two trails, and then taking the other trail back to the South. The map includes other recommended routes.
North’s trails – like Heartbreak Hill and Phil’s Folly – are generally more challenging than those of South, but there are some nice short loops and a new children’s trail near the parking lot. Many members have never discovered what the North has to offer. The snow lasts longer, the hills are beautiful, and there are certainly some thrills. The trails at North are groomed only for classic skiing at present. North to South: North and South are connected by two long and remote trails, #1 and #3. We try to maintain both through the winter, though #3 poses an ongoing challenge. Since this skiing is challenging, and goes through fairly isolated areas, it is particularly important not to ski these stretches alone! Take emergency supplies — extra clothing, food, water and matches.
The annual Hans Weber Nakkerloppet event in February is a great opportunity to discover these trails.
The club maintains 7.5 KM of national competition standard trails for race events and training. They have been greatly improved (widened and smoothed) for the 2007/2008 season.
