Powering our future!

It’s time to make snowmaking greener at Nakkertok by upgrading our connection to Hydro Quebec’s electrical grid. Currently, our snowmaking operation relies on an aging diesel generator and we need to plan for what comes next.

Nakkertok Project

Replace Diesel Generator with Hydro Quebec Grid Electricity for Snowmaking

Context: Nakkertok currently has electrical service from Hydro Quebec, at the same voltage and capacity needed to power a typical home. This service is used for the chalet, workshop, and all lighting loads.

Snowmaking at Nakkertok demands a much higher voltage and power requirement than can be met by the current supply from Hydro Quebec. Currently we meet this higher demand using the large diesel generator near the snowmaking shed. We plan to replace the diesel generator with high voltage / high amperage electricity from Hydro Quebec. This transition will require a significant capital investment, and hence the multi year fundraising program beginning in 2025.

Project Description. The basic project is to bring 600V 3 phase electricity into Nakkertok from the corner of Av Gatineau/Ch Taché to the Nakkertok electrical building. The electrical building will be upgraded to meet the necessary requirements, and we will distribute power from there to the snowmaking building and to the other facility loads. See presentation made to the Nakkertok Board in 2023 with an overview of the project – the basic project remains the same today, although the cost assumptions need updating. Apologies, this presentation is in english only.

Expected project benefits

In using electricity from Hydro Quebec compared to the diesel powered generator, we expect the following benefits:

Rough Cost Estimate

A rough approximation of this capital cost is $350K. We will be completing a detailed cost estimate in the summer 2025.

Target Implementation

We can plan on implementation only once the funding is secure. We know that Hydro Quebec needs a minimum of 12 months lead time.  The earliest we could see this implemented is the fall of 2026, more likely 2027.

Next Steps

We will complete the detailed technical description and cost estimate, continue fundraising and grant applications, and update the club members, donors, and stakeholders as new information is available.
