U10 – Mini Racing Rabbits

The U10 – Mini Racing Rabbits program is an enriched program for 8 and 9 yr olds who have completed JR 2 or equivalent and are seeking a more intensive training program than offered by the Learn to Ski (Jackrabbit) program, and an introduction to competitive cross-country skiing. Participants should be excited about cross-country skiing, willing and able to follow instructions, reasonably fit, and willing and able to undertake sustained athletic activity for 1.5 to 2 hrs. The program focuses on building skill, speed, flexibility, the FUNdamentals of movement and physical literacy (agility, balance, coordination) – and of course, having lots and lots of fun on snow!

Training Times Wednesday Evenings (1.5 hrs) and Saturday Mornings (2 hrs), from the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving to the end of March.
Skill Requirements Participants must have completed Jackrabbit 2 or equivalent, (age-appropriate mastery of diagonal stride, double pole, herringbone, and snow-plow).
Equipment Requirements Participants should have both classic and skate poles, combi boots, and both classic and skate skis, as well as good running shoes for fall training.
Program Specifics
  • Coaching is provided by volunteer coaches, with support from professional club coaches
  • Dryland training (October to November) includes hikes, games, relays, fitness stations, scavenger hunts
  • On snow training (November to March) includes games, relays, scavenger hunts, skill stations, races, loppets
  • Athletes will receive coaching support at at least two local races, including Nakkertok’s Cookie Race.
Program Contribution Parents are expected to contribute significantly to the season’s activities, in addition to the basic club co-op commitment, for a total of 6 days per adult or 10 days per family. These contributions may include:

      • Racing event support
      • Trail clearing and facility clean-up
