The board is very excited to share that plans to have mountain bike trails made at Nakkertok South are well under way. To begin with, Nakkertok’s lease of the land has been rewritten and extended to include all four seasons, rather than the winter only. Our primary objective is to provide a well-designed and sustainable mountain bike trail network with the capacity to host major race events. Once the trails are up and running, it would only make sense to follow the lead of our excellent Ski programming and offer Mountain Bike programming as well. We are currently in communication with several regional clubs who offer mountain bike programming and will share more information as it becomes available.

First and foremost, we need to design and develop our trail network. Trails will be introduced in a phased fashion. A condensed version of these phases and a prospective conceptual map can be seen below. Of note, this map is currently for illustrative purpose only, the final location and difficulty level of each trail still needs to be determined. We do not yet have a start date for trail construction, but we will keep all club members informed as to progress and when the trails will be open for use.

  • Phase 1: Construction of 12-15 KM of beginner & intermediate single-track trails.
  • Phase 2: Addition of 10 KMs of intermediate & advanced trails, including a bike park zone or “skills” trails that will be suitable to beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.
  • Phase 3: Addition of ~10 KMs of trails (difficulty levels to be determined).

A lot of thought (& many hours of virtual meetings) have been put into the development of the trail network. The plans would not be going ahead as they are had Nakkertok not partnered with OMBA (Ottawa Mountain Bike Association). We would like to acknowledge and thank the volunteers from OMBA. Additionally, we would like to thank the volunteers from a keen group of Cantley mountain bikers with the group, Sentiers Cyclables en Forêt.

We encourage all members who have any interest in mountain biking and have not already done so, to join OMBA. OMBA has been involved with the development and maintenance of many of the mountain bike trails in our area. An annual family membership is $55, an adult membership is $ 25 and a youth annual membership is $18. More information is found below on their website ottawamba.org/cms/join/
